As a field trip for his CAS Design Cultures, David was in Boston and Guatemala. He also took the opportunity to spend some time with Candace in Boston. The trip lasted almost three weeks and involved visits to MIT MediaLab, MIT D-Lab and MassArt as part of the course, a concert of the BSO in Symphony Hall and visits to many highlights like the Museum of Fine Arts, Harvard, various eateries (where we always got too much to eat!) and the Artisan’s Asylum maker community. The Guatemala trip started and ended in Guatemala City and took in Panajachel and Antigua Guatemala. The whole trip was organised by Mona, who had been my mentor in the CAS Design Thinking. In Guatemala, we met up with Omar of Link4 and three Guatemalan locals who extended our team.
The main destination was Santa Catarina Palopó, where we stayed with indigenous Maya families and carried out a design challenge to develop ideas for how to introduce sustainable tourism into the village without destroying their traditional way of life. Part of the research involved going across beautiful Lake Atitlán to the more touristy San Juan and San Pedro. A trip involving many impressions and a very wide range from the very wealthy in Cambridge MA to the very poor in Santa Catarina Palopó. The latter seemed much happier with their lot!
Last Autumn, Mark and Stuart met Áedán by chance in a bar in London and told him that they would be going to Ludwigshafen am Rhein (opposite Mannheim) to record some music by Shostakovich that Mark had reconstructed from piano scores and film soundtracks. This was the perfect opportunity to visit good friends in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse (Peter, Brigitte, Konstantin and Miriam), see their vines, watch a professional recording being made, meet various old friends, including Rafael from Berlin, see the sights of Ludwigshafen (BASF) and Mannheim, and of course eat too much! We had a great week: it was super just to get away and be with friends!
This year, Jacqueline and David went to a cosy French restaurant in Central Zurich for the traditional “Silvester” meal. The barometer over the door augured hopefully well for 2019. On 1st January, 2019 we had our salmon evening in the Atelier with a splendid table design by Jacqueline and the usual fantastic Scottish salmon imported by Ahmet. If the meal is anything to go by, 2019 should be a good year.
They managed to lose our “family tree” (Christmas tree from last year put back in the ground and looked after for the whole year) in Bachsermärt. But we managed to get this splendid tree at the Zurich Stadtwald. Christmas was held in Bargen this year (traditional fondue chinoise!) and a great time was had by all. We “only” had a brunch in Wiedikon on the 25th. David and Jacqueline were in Baden for a special Christmas Eve event at friends. Unfortunately Henry and Louis were sick with a cold over Christmas, nothing that a visit to the vet on Christmas Eve couldn’t put right 😉
Winter came as usual in December, but only stayed for one day. The weather is unseasonably warm and rain is forecast for Christmas…
